what's a word for miserable, but worse?

"We are always paid for our suspicion by finding what we suspect." - Henry David Thoreau
at least two thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity, idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religious or political idols. my day has been filled with an unfeasible, absurd heap of misery.
the more i see of man, the more i like dogs. not that i'm losing faith in humanity. just humans.
